What does it do?

SugAR Poke uses augmented reality to scan front labels of food products to tell users in real-time how much added sugar is in the product. A green label indicates no added sugar; a black label indicates how many teaspoons of added sugar.

Why do we need it?

To promote the consumption of healthy food items with no/low added sugar as a means to combat childhood obesity; to increase awareness of the presence of added sugar and its adverse health effects; to provide free nutritional education.

Who is it for?

Children and their families, especially from lower-income backgrounds and/or from minority populations who are most affected by childhood obesity due to less access to nutrition education and healthy food options. But, can be used by all.

What makes it stand out from the crowd?

The first augmented reality app to be used for public health. No bar-code required. The units are in teaspoons instead of grams, which makes it easier to read. The teaspoons indicated is for the entire product-not just serving size.

What’s next?

Expand the current database to include every processed food in a U.S. grocery store. Gamify the app to make it more appealing to children. Suggest green label alternatives, and provide positive reinforcement for green label products.
